The Reivers Way

Day 8 (Uswayford to Wooler, 17.5 miles)

Another lovely sunny morning! We left the farm at 7:45 to get a jump on our second long day. The navigation was challenging throughout the day over the Cheviots, but we never went wrong and it didn’t slow us down. The hills were beautiful and peaceful; we did not see another walker until nearing the road into Wooler. Though the morning’s route did have quite a few boggy bits, there was little real erosion as one finds on the Pennine Way, and the afternoon brought better terrain throughout. The last stretch of hills leading to Wooler Common was quiet and lovely, with no company but the sound of lapwings and swallows overhead. On approaching the Common, we were treated to views of the low rolling coastal hills that we’d cross tomorrow, and to the North Sea beyond. We reached our excellent B&B, Winton House, just after 6:00, and later walked down the hill to the Tanquerville Arms for our evening meal (and pints of the delicious ale, Northumerland “Extra Smooth”). Back to the room to enjoy a late night sip of Laphroig before bed! This was a tough but beautiful and satisfying day on the Reivers Way.
