The Dales Way

Day 7 (Staveley to Bowness, 6 miles)

We planned a short final day, as Bruce and I were catching an afternoon train to Glasgow in order to walk the West Highland Way while Suzanne & Ted proceeded to Stonethwaite in Borrowdale for a week's walking in the lakes. It was a fairly dreary morning in Staveley, with grey skies and steady rain--but no wind, fortunately. We had forgotten from our earlier walk of the Way how dramatic this final stretch is, as the gentle Dales terrain gives way to the rougher Lake District landscape. Gorse was in full bloom, brightening an otherwise dull day and providing a lovely complement to hawthorn and more bluebells. This day's walk provides dramatic views to High Street in the lakes (sadly not clear enough for us to capture on film). The only detraction is appropriately named Hag End, a rather run down property made especially creepy with its dozens of junked cars and chained, barking dogs. Before meeting the road into Bowness town, we stopped at the "Dales Way bench" for photos, then celebrated over lunch at Auntie Val's tea room. (Our plan to celebrate properly at the Porthole Eating Place was dashed when we found them closed for lunch, but Auntie Val's was a welcome substitute). At the edge of Lake Windermere, we were delighted to find "The Girls," who were posing at the water's edge for photos taken by Mary's husband, Gordon. Our reunion was complete when we spotted Bob and Keith heading toward the water, and captured everyone in a final photo. The sun broke through the clouds, providing a fitting end to a glorious week!

Our spirits weren't dampened by rain!
