Mount Tamalpais Watershed (from Bon Tempe Dam: Kent, Helen Markt, Cataract, High Marsh, Stocking, and Rocky Ridge trails, 10.8 miles)

Bon Tempe Lake, with Mt. Tamalpais in the background

We begin on the Kent Trail near Bon Tempe Lake (one of three reservoirs in the watershed)

Gemma carries her own backpack--wait until "dad" finds out!

Alpine Lake is the second reservoir passed on today's route (the third, Lake Lagunitas, requires a diversion)

The Kent Trail meanders above Alpine Lake...                ... through oak, bay laurel, and fir woodland

Two views of Alpine Lake

An old bridge crosses a smaller creek ...                        ... and eventually brings us to the Cataract Trail and Falls

The Cataract Trail rises above the creek, and is lush with ferns and shade-loving flowers

We feel much smaller amidst the fern canyons along Cataract Creek

Gemma enjoys a perfect swimming hole (and freedom from her pack!)

The High Marsh Trail emerges onto a lovely meadow...

... with expansive views to the west ...

... and to the east

The High Marsh Trail passes two peaceful marshes; we found a lone mallard at the first

The second marsh is surround by both young and huge mature fir trees

Where the Stocking Trail meets Rocky Ridge Road, we're treated to this expansive view (with Pilot Knob at center)

Further along Rocky Ridge, from the chaparrel, we overlook Alpine Lake

Late afternoon sun highlights Bon Tempe Lake and the dam
